Our time here is short. The impact doesn’t have to be.

I’m Peter Chang. I run solar businesses in Adelaide, and I put what they earn to work for orphanages in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Owner, Solar Connected and Construct Solar

The number I think about

A bowl of rice, every two minutes.

The solar systems we donate keep saving the orphanages money on power, year after year, without anyone lifting a finger. Turned into food, those savings come to about one bowl of rice every two minutes, day and night.

Today

1 bowl every 2 minutes
Next bowl in 2:00

The goal

1 bowl every 2 seconds
0 bowls since you arrived

Two seconds is 60 times faster than today. At the size of our systems, that is roughly 900 of them, quietly working for children who aren’t born yet.

That is the legacy I want. Our time on this earth as individuals isn’t long, but that doesn’t mean we can’t create lasting impact for others well beyond it.

How we count it

Each solar system we donate saves an orphanage roughly the cost of 1,500 kg of rice a year, the figure we publish on the Little Sunshine Pledge website. With 15 systems generating today, that is about 22,500 kg a year. At 60 to 100 grams of dry rice a bowl, that works out at one bowl every 1.4 to 2.3 minutes, so I round it to two. It is an equivalence for the savings, not rice we ship. The goal of one bowl every 2 seconds is the same sum, 60 times over.

Free solar for orphanages.

I co-founded Little Sunshine Pledge to put free solar on the roofs of orphanages and children’s centres in Vietnam and Cambodia. The power bill they no longer pay becomes money for food, school, medicine and the small things that make a childhood.

One orphanage used its savings to bring in a dentist to check every child’s teeth. A solar system keeps doing that for 25 to 40 years.

These are full orphanages, some with 50 rooms or more, and many have been running for decades. Our systems look small next to Australian ones. Getting one onto a roof there is a commercial-sized job. On one roof we built a steel frame first, then carried every panel up four floors by hand. What counts is what each system saves an orphanage, year after year.

It is a registered Australian charity, and donations are tax deductible. GoodWe, Clenergy and Yingli Solar donate the equipment, and a share of every power purchase agreement Solar Connected installs helps fund the work.

Business

Two solar companies that fund the giving.

Commercial

Solar Connected

A national top 5 medium-commercial installer in the Solar Nerds rankings for 2024 and 2025, and number 1 in Queensland in 2024. The next 15 years

A charity that sells solar, so the giving never runs out.

Where this goes next is a full charity machine: a solar retail business across South East Asia and then the rest of Asia, owned by the mission. Every dollar of profit goes to two things, employing local people and installing more orphanages.

To fund that for the next 15 years, I’m looking for the right partner to install power purchase agreements with us, so the work is paid for year after year.

The target is 25 to 50 orphanages a year. Over 15 years that is 375 to 750 more, close to the 800 to 900 systems it takes to reach one bowl of rice every two seconds.

Our time is short. A machine built like this keeps going long after we have stopped.

Balance

Business and giving, side by side.

I have been in business since I was 19, and I like to get from A to Z as fast as I can with nothing wasted on the way. When I looked at charities, I kept learning that only 30 or 40 cents of each dollar reached the people it was meant for.

I wanted a model where every dollar goes back. So I built the giving into the businesses. Customers cut their power bills with Solar Connected, and an orphanage cuts theirs too. Solar suits that, because the saving repeats every year for decades, from one generation to the next.

Time is the one thing none of us can add to. I try to spend mine on things that keep working when I am not there.

Partner with us

It takes more than one person to change millions of lives.

I’m keen to work with new partners. If you own a business and want to be part of this, come to Vietnam with us, see an install for yourself, and donate a solar system with your plaque on it. We would be thrilled to welcome you.

Every system we add keeps saving an orphanage money for 25 to 40 years. A partner who joins today is part of that for the whole time.

Already have a business and want to talk about how it could fit? Message me and we will work out the right way for you to be involved, whether that is a system, a partnership or a visit.
